A friend emailed me today and shared that she was preparing to teach geography to her elementary school students. I responded quickly with, just draw Africa. It’s all they need to know anyways. Without hesitation, she agreed and then reminded me that first her students must know what Africa is.
The muse of poetry must have crept into my being, for suddenly it became very clear to me.
Aids and antelopes,
Mountaintops, malaria, and mangoes.
It is tribal dress and tribal warfare,
Sunsets, savannahs, and skin.
Africa is beauty raw,
and primitive depth
as the soil itself.
